Gas Soft Nitriding
Gas Soft Nitriding
Gas Soft Nitriding (GSN) is a thermo-chemical treatment that involves diffusional additions of both nitrogen and carbon to the surface of ferrous materials at a temperature of 1058F. The GSN process also known as Gas Nitrocarburizing or Gaseous Ferritic Nitrocarburizing. The atmosphere is formed from ammonia gas and endothermic gas consisting of carbon monoxide, nitrogen and hydrogen. The benefit of the GSN process is a tough ductile epsilon carbon-nitride phase with other materials and oxides (the compound zone). An additional benefit of GSN is the creation of the diffusion zone, which contains a much lower concentration of nitrogen in solid solution with the base material.
